⭐️ The power of asking for feedback.
Yesterday I had my last leadership coaching session with an experienced school principal. This in fact is a second round of coaching as he moved to a new school this year.
What I love about working with Tom (not his real name) is that he is open to feedback from me as his coach and it is reciprocal. I am open to his feedback as well.
In this last session when I asked Tom for feedback about the 3 things I did as his coach that helped him achieve what he did.
He said:
➡️ You kept me on track (tricky at times for me as Tom loves a new “shiny object”).
➡️ I gave him honest feedback about this pattern of jumping around topics and getting distracted rather than focused. He said he is very conscious of this pattern now in all his interactions.
➡️ I provided him tools that helped him be a better leader. When I asked what tools he said the Human Synergistics Australia & NZ Life Styles inventory “that was a game changer as I now know what it means now to be a constructive leader”.
Tom also mentioned the solutionfocus approach and tools to help change the direction of the conversation from problem talk to solution talk. He said he has now introduced Solution Focus and Haesun [hey-sun] Moon Dialogic Orientation Quadrant doq model to his staff to help change the culture and shifting the mindset with all his staff.
I was delighted that Tom learnt so much and is applying what he learnt.
This is not new feedback I have had from leaders I have worked with over the years, but it still delights me when I see leaders apply what they have learnt in coaching.
What I like to do when I coach is be very transparent of how I am coaching - the process, so the leader not only achieves their goals but have a toolkit of new ways of leading and having conversations.
As Maya Angelou once said, “when we know better we do better”.
And guess what when I asked Tom what his focus with his executive team for the next 6 months, he was clear - 3 big rocks. The main one being he will now have regular 1:1’s with his senior leaders to grow them as leaders.
Go Tom!! 🎉🥳
I am curious - do you ask for feedback of your leadership coaching or provide feedback? What impact does it have?
